Sports Massage Therapy Ulverston
A sports massage involves a variety of deep manipulative massage techniques. At Ulverston Physiotherapy, sports massage is often incorporated into your recovery process, whether for therapeutic purposes in sports therapy or as part of your rehabilitation program at our Ulverston Sports Massage clinic and Physio clinic.
The techniques used in sports massage include the application of thumbs, hands, and elbows to deliver moderate to deep pressure on the soft tissues (muscles).
These techniques are specifically designed to target and alleviate muscular strains and tightness. Additionally, sports massage can be highly beneficial for individuals experiencing tight muscles due to occupational stress and the demands of work.
Sports Massages are commonly used in the following circumstances, Pre sports event, Post sports event, maintenance, part of your training methods, tight muscles, acute pain or chronic pain.
Pre Event
Pre-event massage involves the application of vigorous and rhythmic massage strokes that stimulate muscle fibers, helping to prepare you for physical activity. This type of massage can enhance tissue flexibility, improve performance, and reduce the risk of injury. Additionally, pre-event massage aids in mental preparation, helping you get “into the zone” before engaging in your activity.
Post-Event
This technique involves the use of slow, gentle massage strokes to relax muscles after physical activity. It helps eliminate waste products generated during exercise, supporting the recovery process. At the cellular level, sports massage increases blood circulation, which aids in removing metabolic waste from the muscles. With extensive experience, Ulverston Physio provides regular massage treatments tailored to athletes’ needs.
Maintenance
Massage can be effectively used to reduce the risk of injury and maintain healthy muscles. This technique helps alleviate muscular tension, preserve flexibility, promote cellular exchange, and decrease stress and anxiety. Cellular exchange involves removing waste products while facilitating the delivery of nutrients to active muscles. Increased availability of nutrients such as oxygen, calcium, and iron supports soft tissue repair and can enhance overall performance.
Part of Training Programme
Massage therapy can be highly beneficial for relieving tight muscles. Muscular tightness can arise from various factors, including physical activity, overuse injuries, muscle imbalances, occupational demands, or psychological stress. If not addressed, muscular tightness can lead to chronic pain, restrict your range of motion, diminish strength, and negatively impact performance and overall function.
Muscular Tightness
Muscular tightness can arise from various factors, including physical activity, overuse injuries, occupational demands, and psychological stress. If not addressed, it can lead to chronic muscle pain, reduced range of motion, diminished strength, and decreased performance.
The mechanical effects of sports massage include enhancing the breakdown and realignment of collagen fibers. The application of deep pressure can help break apart cross-fiber adhesions within muscle knots and new scar tissue, promoting better alignment of collagen fibers in a parallel and functional manner. However, it is important to note that there is insufficient evidence regarding the realignment of collagen fibers in old scar tissue or longstanding muscle knots. Nonetheless, you can still experience the therapeutic benefits of massage therapy.
Acute Pain
Acute pain can arise from various causes, such as new injuries, inflammation, or overuse. Massage therapy can alleviate pain through a mechanism known as the pain gate theory.
According to the pain gate theory, a non-harmful stimulus, such as massage, can inhibit the transmission of harmful stimuli associated with an injury. For instance, rubbing an area of your body after bumping into something can quickly reduce the sensation of pain.
Gentle massage is effective in desensitising the superficial “A beta” pain receptors, while deeper sports massage targets the deeper “A delta” pain receptors. Both types of receptors play a crucial role in the pain gate theory, helping to reduce the acute onset of pain.
